It is that time of year again...back to school time.  I have just entered the count down with only 5 days left of summer vacation.  The first couple of days are so exciting and nerve racking all at the same time.  I struggle falling asleep the night before school starts.  My mind is always racing about all the things I want to accomplish tomorrow, the things I need to remember to bring or do, and anticipation about meeting my new kids!  I try to plan lots of team building and get to know you games and activities.  Here is one the my favorite activities that I do each year.

I call this activity  Take What You Need.  One the first day of school I bring in several rolls of toilet paper.  The only direction that I give students is to take as much has they need to get the job done.  Of course they look at me very confused and want to know what it is for.  Don't tell them yet.  Later in the day I explain that for each square of toilet paper the kids have they will share something about their self.  Most of the kids are really excited to share...unless they have taken half of a roll.  One year I had a young man take 23 squares!!  Needless to say we let him reveal a few secrets at a time.  This is a great time filler that you can start and stop at any time.  I am always amazed at some of the responses I get from my students.

Summer Has Arrived!

Today I finished packing up my classroom for the summer.  All the boxes are packed, decorations taken down and bookshelves are unloaded.  It looks like a blank slate once again...it is always a bittersweet feeling at the end of the year.  I'm always excited for summer vacation to begin, but it is also sad to think about my time being finished with my class.  You see this year I moved to 5th grade and this is truly the last opportunity I have with some of my students in the classroom.  They will move on to the middle school next year.  I guess all you can do is prepare them the best you can and hope for the best!  Good luck Class of 2022!  I will miss you all.

This is an extra special year for me because my very first class received their diplomas on Saturday!  It is hard to believe it has been 10 years since I began my teaching journey.  I'm so proud of you all Class of 2015.

Packing Up a Year...Starting a New Adventure

Hello, all in the blog world! I am Jackie, a wife, a mother and  a teacher.  I am an experienced teacher who took a few years off to get married and start a family.  I just got back into the classroom with a room full of 5th graders!  It has been a tough transition for my family and I this year.  This was the first time teaching while I had a husband, and a 3 year old.  It has been very difficult trying to figure out the perfect balance of family and work.

This year I've spent countless hours on tons of wonderful teaching blogs.  I've found so many wonderful ideas and tips that I've used in my classroom.  I have been wanting to share some of my own ideas with the blog world as well.  I've been toying with this idea of starting my own blog for the past few months. Now that the year is coming to a close I decided this summer is the perfect time to jump in with both feet. Wish me luck on this new journey!
